Just Talk
Yesterday a colleague reached out to me to talk through how best to proceed with her team after the death of one of her employees due to Covid-19. There is no rulebook or "best practice," for how to have a conversation like this and she simply needed to speak to someone to air her thoughts and solidify her approach. I simply listened as she shared her thoughts on this very sad and unimaginable reality of her business. I know the impact of listening is very real. But the power of talking can be even more profound.
Talking with another person is one of the most beneficial things we can do as human beings. In an article on Psychology Today a study was conducted where researchers found that simply talking about your feelings "can be profoundly healing—reducing stress, strengthening our immune system, and reducing physical and emotional distress." Another study determined that "labeling our feelings reduces activation in the amygdala, our brain’s alarm system that triggers the fight-or-flight reaction. When we give words to our emotions," we are able to move away from this extreme thinking and let ourselves think and behave more rationally.
